Bespoke Rooflight Proves A Bright Solution For 17th Century Somerset Barn Restoration

The Project

When it came to selecting a rooflight for her 17thCentury barn restoration project, Mrs Stainton was keen to source a product that would match her ambitions to create a large, light and creative workspace.

A bright environment, which would make the most of the natural daylight available, was particularly important as the space is now regularly used for educating young people in wildlife conservation.

Following extensive research on the Internet, Mrs Stainton opted for a bespoke rooflightas the building required something more unique to fit the old unconventional roof structure, in which it was to be situated.

Client Testimonial

“Having given consideration to a number of other firms, I was impressed with their portfolio of work, which included bespoke made rooflights for similar buildings.

“I also preferred to support a local company, who manufacture the product in the UK; this was a decision that really paid off. The personal service that I received was excellent. I liked the fact that I was dealing with people who really knew what they were talking about. This is something which you don’t always expect with some of the larger companies.”

Outcome

Following consultation with the client and her architect, we hand made the steel framed rooflight to their exact specifications. This included electric actuators, an internal American ash frame, and high specification Pilkington glazing.

The product also needed to satisfy the Planning team from South Somerset District Council as the barn fell within the curtilage of the main Listed farmhouse. Therefore the rooflights were required to have a slender profile in order to sits in-line with the roof and remain in-keeping with the original character of the building.

On receipt of the rooflights, which arrived ahead of schedule, both the client and her architect were impressed with the quality of the final product.

Client Testimonial

“I was surprised by how heavy they were. You could certainly tell they were extremely well made and not produced using flimsy plastic. Despite the fact that the rooflights were reasonably priced in comparison to some of the other quotes I received, the quality was excellent and every aspect of the product suggested quality craftsmanship.”

“Both myself and the architect have been very pleased with the rooflight and the whole service we have received.”
