Architect and homeowner Sean Kember converted a late Edwardian garage and car showroom into a modern 21st-century home.
Located near the seafront in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, the property was designed and built in 1909 by local architect Thomas Hedges for the Williams Brothers.
The building remained a car showroom for over 100 years and is still a local icon.
Aware of the building’s local history, the new owners preserved its original fabric while renovating to create their dream seaside home.
The renovation included rebuilding the old steel roof with new timbers and installing large conservation rooflights to flood the space with natural daylight.
Stella Rooflight designed 12 bespoke conservation rooflights for the project.
This included 10 smaller rooflights, six of which open, fitting rafters of 690mm x 940mm and 550mm x 740mm.
A larger, non-opening rooflight measuring 3000mm wide by 3500mm high serves as a grand centerpiece.
This rooflight was supplied in two sections, each divided into three panes, designed to sit one on top of the other.
All 12 rooflights were made from 316L stainless steel and finished with a high-quality Marine Grade C5 black powder coating.
This choice was crucial due to the building’s coastal location and the rust issues associated with mild carbon steel rooflights.
The Stella rooflights feature high-specification glazing with a BioClean Self-Clean and Solar Control outer pane, combined with a warm edge spacer filled with Argon gas.
The internal glass panel uses Planitherm Comfort Plus for an ideal balance of light, warmth, and comfort. Inside, the rooflights are finished with a stunning American Ash liner.

A specialist crane was needed to lift the larger rooflights from the delivery vehicle, over the building, and into place.
The installation required careful planning and was overseen by Ben Valentine-Lynden from Blackpool Industrial Roofing.
Ben said: “Throughout the process we dealt directly with Paul at Stella. He was incredibly helpful throughout, advising us on the whole installation from the crane lift to weather proofing the roof lights.
"Paul was also happy to schedule the arrival of the rooflights to suit us and the weather, on arrival the units were packaged excellently and made for an easy transition from wagon to roof.
“Overall I think these are a great product, easy enough to install and the finished look is fantastic.
"I would definitely recommend Stella Rooflights and would certainly use them again.”
"Stella’s technical team worked closely with us throughout the process and were a great help in making sure that everything ran smoothly.
"As you would expect we did a great deal of research before deciding to run with Stella Rooflights, and from your initial assistance with the specification through to the installation on site, you have been great to work with.
"I would also like to say that the quality of the rooflights is excellent! Thank you.”
