The Project

During the pandemic in 2020, Katherine and James contacted Cox Architects.

They were considering purchasing a larger house in a leafy south-London suburb to gain more space and enjoy a generous rear garden.

Bringing the Outside In

The garden faced north, and Katherine and James, light-loving New Zealanders, worried the house would be too dark.

Cox Architects reassured them that the right design could bring ample natural light and improve the connection between the house and garden.

Due to budget constraints, they opted for a facelift rather than a rebuild.

The design acts as a stage set, preserving much of the original structure behind it.

Light, Bright, Open Plan Living

Cox Architects and builders Elson Properties partnered with Stella to commission three bespoke rooflights.

These rooflights transformed the renovation, flooding the new open-plan living space with natural daylight.

A Bespoke Rooflight Solution

The main rooflight was a large fixed design, measuring 5641mm by 2022mm, with four glazing bars and five high-performance double-glazed units.

The second fixed rooflight measured 2311mm by 2022mm, and the third, a manually opening rooflight, measured 1226mm by 2022mm.

All three rooflights had 316L stainless steel frames and high-performance marine-grade powder coat finishes.

The glass units featured 6mm toughened SGG BioClean Natura glass with self-clean and solar control, a 16mm argon-filled spacer, and a 6mm toughened Planitherm inner pane.

American Ash liners completed the sleek internal appearance, complementing the rest of the property.
