Historic England Specify Stella Rooflights

Historic England specified Stella bespoke conservation Rooflights to meet their strict conservation requirements

The Project

Historic England installed a Stella bespoke conservation rooflight at their York Regional Office.

Located at 37 Tanner Row in the Micklegate Ward, this five-storey, red brick building is Grade II Listed and within a Conservation Area.

Built as "The George Hotel" in the 1850s, later known as "The North Eastern," it now serves as the modern offices of Historic England, the government body dedicated to preserving and enjoying England's historic environment.

Strict Conservation Requirements

Stella was approached by Smith & Garratt, specialist heritage surveyors, to design a bespoke conservation rooflight for 37 Tanner Row.

The rooflight needed to provide proper ventilation for the communal stairwell and meet strict conservation requirements due to the building's historic significance.

Stella rooflights, with their slender steel frames that sit flush within the roofline, were ideal for maintaining the heritage of the building while ensuring functionality and compliance with conservation standards.

Unique Design

The Stella team collaborated closely with Smith & Garratt and CG Building & Restoration Ltd on an innovative design.

They aimed to meet the approval of Historic England and the Planning Committee.

The 2185mm x 2050mm rooflight included four casements. The two center side-hung panes open electronically via high-performance chain actuators, providing the necessary ventilation by opening 90 degrees.

The two fixed side panes matched the level of the opening casements, an important detail for planning approval.

Fine Lines of Stainless Steel

Stella rooflights feature marine-grade 316 stainless steel frames with a C5 coastal powder coating to prevent rust and extend lifespan.

A bespoke handmade hardwood liner provides a stunning internal finish.

The high-spec glazing includes BioClean Natura Self-Clean and Solar Control outer pane, a black warm edge spacer (Argon Gas), and a Planitherm One Low E inner pane.

Due to the size and weight, CG Building craned the rooflights into place, securing them with a pre-formed lead flashing kit supplied by Stella Rooflight.
