Little Woodend Cottage, set in 10 acres near Markyate, dates back to 1734 and was part of the Beechwood estate. It was listed Grade II in 1987. The cottage was extensively extended in the 19th century, transforming an old Hertfordshire long barn into family accommodation.
In the 20th century, a lean-to conservatory was added.
Today, Mr. and Mrs. Humbert have completed further renovations, creating a modern living space while preserving the building's historic legacy.
The renovation replaced a deteriorating 1970s lean-to conservatory with a new living space, hallway, and entrance.
The original conservatory's poor construction ignored the historic building's materials and design.
However, the timber framing on the east wall added significant character. To preserve this, the Conservation Officer required the wall to remain visible from outside.
This was achieved by installing extensive roof glazing, reducing the scale of the new structure and providing ample light and space inside while showcasing the historic timber wall.
The Humberts aimed to maximise thermal efficiency in their new family dining area, a key home focal point.
With a large glazed area needed, an off-the-shelf solution wouldn't work.
They sought help from bespoke conservation roof window specialists, Stella Rooflight.
Stella collaborated with the Humberts to create a bespoke fixed-design rooflight.
Constructed from stainless steel, it measures 4100mm by 1900mm internally.
The rooflight features six toughened self-clean double-glazed units with five glazing bars, meeting both traditional aesthetic requirements and essential thermal performance.
Inside, the roof window is finished with a handmade American Ash liner, painted white (RAL9010) to blend with the ceiling.
Homeowner, Jonathan Humbert said: “We have completely transformed what was an old, dilapidated room, into a bright, welcoming space, which is in no small part thanks to the large Stella rooflight.
"The new conservatory area is now not only much more sensitive to the building’s historical fabric, but serves as a central hub for our family home, which is flooded with light and accessible for use year round.
"We have been really impressed with the Stella team throughout the whole process and we are extremely pleased with the quality of the rooflight.”
